High-pressure drain jetting explained: pressures, nozzles and when to use it

Jetting is the workhorse of modern drainage. Done properly it restores a pipe to full bore and flushes the debris away rather than pushing it further down the line. Done badly, on the wrong pipe, it can make an existing defect worse — so the technique matters.
How jetting works
A jetting unit pushes water down a high-pressure hose to a nozzle with rear-facing jets. Those jets propel the hose up the pipe against the flow while scouring the pipe wall. Debris is broken up and washed back towards the chamber, where it is removed rather than left in the system. That flush-back is the key difference between jetting and rodding.
Pressure and flow
Pressure breaks material up; flow carries it away. Domestic drainage work typically uses around 2,000–4,000 psi with a modest flow rate, while larger commercial sewers need higher flow to move volume. Both numbers matter — a high-pressure unit with poor flow will cut through a fat plug and leave the debris sitting in the pipe.
Nozzles and what they are for
- Standard/penetrating nozzle — punches through a blockage to restore initial flow
- Flushing nozzle — high rear-jet ratio to wash silt and debris back to the chamber
- Degreasing / rotating nozzle — spins to scour fat, grease and scale off the pipe wall
- Root-cutting head — mechanical cutter or high-impact rotating jet for root mats
- Chain flail / descaler — for hard scale and concrete residue in robust pipework
Does jetting damage drains?
Sound pipework in good condition is not damaged by correctly applied jetting. Risk comes from using excessive pressure on fragile pitch-fibre, badly cracked clay or poorly jointed pipework — which is why an experienced operator adjusts pressure to the pipe material and stops when something does not feel right. If a pipe is already broken, jetting will reveal it rather than cause it, and a survey should follow.
Rule of thumb: jetting is a cleaning tool, not a repair. If a run needs jetting more than once a year, the answer is a survey, not more jetting.
When jetting is the right call
- Fat, oil and grease build-up on kitchen and catering waste lines
- Silt and sand in car park drainage, channel drains and gullies
- Wipes and rag causing recurring soft blockages
- Scale in older commercial systems reducing bore
- Pre-survey cleaning so CCTV footage actually shows the pipe wall
When it is not
Collapsed pipes, displaced joints, severe root damage and back-falls are structural problems. Jetting may restore temporary flow, but the run will fail again. In those cases a CCTV survey with a written report, followed by patch lining, relining or excavation, is the economical route.
Planned jetting for commercial sites
For food outlets, industrial estates, schools and care settings, planned jetting on a schedule is significantly cheaper than reactive call-outs. It also creates a maintenance record — useful for insurers, landlords and environmental compliance.
Frequently asked questions
How long does drain jetting take?
A single domestic blockage is often cleared within an hour. A full commercial system clean, or a heavily silted run with several chambers, can take most of a day.
Should I have a CCTV survey after jetting?
Yes, if the run has blocked before, if the property is older, or if you want evidence of the cause for an insurer or landlord. Jetted pipes are clean, which is exactly when a survey gives the clearest picture.
