Sewage pump station maintenance: a full service guide for owners

A pump station is the only part of a drainage system with moving parts, electrics and a duty cycle — which is exactly why it is the part that fails. Almost every emergency pump call-out we attend traces back to maintenance that was skipped, not to a pump that was simply worn out.
How often should a pump station be serviced?
- Domestic single-property station: annually
- Shared or small development station: every six months
- Commercial, industrial or high-duty station: every three to six months
- Anything handling fats, wipes or trade effluent: quarterly as a minimum
What a proper service includes
- 1Isolate the station safely and follow confined space procedure — nobody enters a wet well without the correct equipment and permits.
- 2Empty and wash down the wet well, removing fat crust, rag and silt.
- 3Lift and inspect each pump: impeller condition, wear ring clearance, cable condition and seal chamber oil.
- 4Clean and test float switches or level probes through the full duty and alarm range.
- 5Check the control panel: contactors, run hours, duty/standby alternation, phase and current draw against nameplate.
- 6Test the high-level alarm, including any telemetry or auto-dialler.
- 7Check non-return and isolation valves, guide rails and lifting chains.
- 8Record run hours and current readings so wear can be tracked between visits.
Run hours and current draw are the two numbers worth tracking. A pump drawing more current for the same duty, or one pump logging far more hours than its twin, is telling you about a fault months before it fails.
Checks owners can do between services
- Press the alarm test button monthly and confirm both audible and visual alarms work
- Look at the panel for tripped breakers or a fault lamp
- Listen — a healthy pump starts cleanly and runs smoothly; hammering, rattling or a pump that runs and runs is a fault
- Note any smell or overflow around the chamber lid
- Keep the chamber lid secure, clear and accessible for the tanker and service van
What kills pumps early
- Wet wipes, sanitary items and rag — the single biggest cause of blocked impellers
- Fats, oils and grease from kitchens forming a crust that jams floats
- Surface water ingress massively increasing duty cycles
- Failed non-return valves causing the pump to recycle the same effluent
- Ignored alarms — an alarm that has been sounding for weeks usually means both pumps are now down
Repair or replace?
Worn seals, blocked impellers, failed floats and control faults are usually economical repairs. Replacement makes more sense when a pump has repeated winding failures, when spares are obsolete, or when the station was undersized for how the site is now used. A good contractor should tell you which situation you are in rather than defaulting to a new pump.

How long does a sewage pump last?
A well-maintained submersible sewage pump typically lasts eight to fifteen years. Poor maintenance, rag ingress and high duty cycles can halve that.
Do I need two pumps?
Any station serving more than one property, or where failure would cause flooding inside a building, should have duty/standby pumps with automatic alternation. It is the difference between an inconvenience and a sewage flood.
